This one simple question you can ask a graphic designer that can save bookkeepers a lot of time, money and hassle when designing their logo, business cards or flyers

I can’t count how many clients have come to me for a logo design, business card or flyer design, or website design for their bookkeeping business and this has been an issue.

Last month I wrote a post called “6 Reasons Not to Fiverr your Bookkeeping Business Logo” and mention that here because this same issue I’m about to talk about is very common with Fiverr designers. But unfortunately it can even happen with more professional and expensive designers to.

When you hire a graphic designer you must ask them before you hire them if you can have the original files. Some might say “no” and that’s fair enough, it’s their intellectual property. They might not want you to alter the files and then associate the design with their name. However….

Not having the original files presents issues for many of our clients when they come to us for another type of design where their logo is required. Or a business card or flyer that needs to be re-designed. If you don’t have the original file, here are some two of the major issues we find our clients run into;

  1. The logo you provide is not a high enough resolution, meaning that your logo might not be high enough quality so that it looks good on the website or business card design. The logo will look pixelated, and low quality. the only way to fix this is to re-draw the logo from scratch meaning, you have to pay for a whole new logo design.
  2. The business card or flyer you are having re-designed won’t be editable meaning our graphic designer will need to re-create your whole design from scratch. The original files are broken down into layers which can be separated and edited. If this file is not available this cannot be done.

You may think “I’ll just go to the designer if I need it and get the file” but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this…

“I’ve been emailing and calling my designer and they won’t return my calls” or “I think they have gone out of business” or “they can’t find the files”.

To save yourself time, money and hassle in the future, make sure you request these original files. Ask for them before you commit to going ahead with the design, and if they won’t give them to you then recognise the risk you are taking purchasing the design from them.

All our logo, business cards, flyer and advertisement designs come with full access to the original files. Make sure you keep them in a safe place!
